Sometimes life gets into directions we never intend, and we lose sight of things that we used to do for fun and amusement. I enjoyed being an author, being out talking about my books, being at tables talking about how to be an author, encouraging others to live their dream. Somewhere along the way, it became about the things that you can't work to make happen. I can't make people buy it, I can't force sales. Then I put it all away. A couple of times if I'm honest. But now, with life changing once again, and a pandemic raging across the world (Get vaccinated, the life you save might be your own), I find myself wanting to do more, be more, and my writing is one way to do that.
Born in Scotland, we celebrate the old tradition of Hogmanay, the Scot way of bringing in the New Year. A party for the incoming new year, part of the tradition is that of a "first footer". This person, tall, dark and handsome, is the first across the threshold in the new year, and it's suppsoed to bring luck, food and prosperity to the house. I've been blessed to be the first footer for my family for over 30 years. As I stand out in the cold, awaiting the bells to chime the changing of the years, I think about the new year, my role in it, and how I should change to be better. To be more than I was last year. This year, a cold turbulent time, I took a resolution to restart my writing, restart my game making (www.mostlynormalgames.com) and update all my websites regularly. That's another week in the "done it" column, I've been updating all my other sites, and now I'm going to clean up the office featured on the back of "Fortress of Angels" so I can get my editing work started. Just a reminder that dreams don't come true, dreams are made true. So go out, find your dreams, and then work to hunt them down and make them true. Thanks for reading, d

I started out writing not to make money, but to get the stories out of my head, to see where they would end up. And after six or so of them, I decided, like a lot of authors, to try to turn pro. This was a blessing and a curse. I was out there! People were buying my work, I had sales, I had validation, I had an audience? Now the need to perform had replaced the joy of just writing, doing it for myself. I had taken a love and turned it into a job. I rushed the second book out, hoping to catch a demanding audience. But I pushed the second book too hard, and burned out. And when it didn't sell like gangbusters, I started to fret. I compulsively watched my sales, watched and watched, mistakenly considering each sales a judgment on me and my worth as an author. But that ignores the market. There is something like a thousand new titles a week on Amazon, probably more. The signal to noise ratio goes way up and even somebody like Shakespeare would be hard to find today. Oh yes there are lightning in a bottle writers, (Ready Player One, The Martian come to mind) but other writers have been at it for years and way more than my two titles. The rational mind knew to play the long game, but the heart likes to beat fast.
The problem is these realizations only come AFTER the soul is wounded from the arrows tipped with the poison of dollars signs. Wounds that take a long time to heal. I'm not fully wounded, but I have at least pulled out the arrow. Admitting you have a problem is the first step towards change. So I post this as an end. Not an end to my writing career, but an ending to worrying about being professional. I'm going back to writing for me. I'll publish via Mostly Normal Publishing when I think it's good, but that's not going to be my focus. My focus now, is me. And the stories that have to get out of me. I'll post them here and up on Holimoren.com so you can ride along with me. Journey to Redemption is now available!!
It's been a long road. I know I promised it "early" 2015, meaning March, but my awesome editor Susan really worked the red pen, making me beat and shape the story until it was ready to publish. I can't thank her enough for keeping after me to make sure I didn't have a sophomore slump. While this book is 60 pages thinner than Fortress, Redemption is more complex, with more point of views and more threads in the tapestry. Here is the teaser: When a flash of an ax in a quiet inn thrusts Dar, apprentice Journeyman, into the midst of an assassination attempt, he becomes the guardian of Drij, a mysterious stranger on a dangerous pilgrimage. Together, he and Drij will journey across Holimoren to a city sought by all who wish to make amends with the Gods—a city known in every language as Redemption. With them will journey people with deeper sorrows, darker secrets, and more horrific memories than all the wars have burned into the man who would dare to guard them. For good or for ill, all who are called to Redemption are changed by the journey. Dar must learn what coming to Redemption really means—for himself, and the world. For as their wagon grows closer to that holy ground, so too does a legend returning from the distant past. A legend that is evil beyond this world. Let me know if you enjoy, hate it, got a good solid meh out of it. I can only get better if I know how I'm doing. So please let me know! Now to figure out if I should keep going on Assault on Bywater, or instead work on a new idea with a fellow writer that takes place between Fortress and Redemption! Wish me luck! Thomas at TWE Indie Reviews just wrapped up a review of my first book Fortress of Angels. The review is here. Thomas and I almost met at a book event in my home town, but I couldn't make it. Thomas reviews a lot of books, of various genres, and provides his no nonsense honest review. To be clear, I didn't pay for this, I just sent TWE Indie Review a book and asked for their opinion.
<SPOILER ALERT> They liked it! Reading Fortress of Angels, I was entertained and I liked it, so I’m giving it 4 stars. There is more to the review (what he liked and didn't like) at http://indiereviews.tweverson.com/2015/05/fortress-of-angels/ Thomas is also on Goodreads and he has his own series of books, The Rain Experience series, which you can get from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. One of the joys of being an author is getting to meet the readers. Having a book signing is a great way to get the word out about my book as well as meet and thank the people that make it possible. Here I am at a cafe doing the old meet and greet.
Next up I'll be at the Just A Game Con in Corvallis OR, Saturday April 18th. Find my booth and one of the first two to say the magic code word "Hol Amroth" and win a prize!! A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
As I continue to work with my editor Susan, this keeps coming up in my mind. Like a lot of you, I first ran into that quote here. A great game and a great quote. (This is my favorite from that game). Susan has been doing saintly work correcting my horrible grammar (as you can tell from these postings) but an often over looked part of editing is removing extraneous words. Authors tend to be wordy. We get paid by the word most of the time, and when doing stuff like NaNoWriMo you want extra words. But they don't always make the product better. I'm reminded of Ben Franklin's story to Thomas Jefferson during the review of the Declaration of Independence. (here's an article about it, go read it, I'll wait) I see my word count dropping, (as did Jefferson) but the flow of story is getting better. (No I don't think my stuff is in the same galaxy as the Declaration) There is a flow to writing. A balancing act put into print. Recognizing fat(wordy excess) from muscle(descriptive prose) is something an editor should be helping you with. And for a lot of authors (including this one) sometime it takes an outside eye, one separate from the parent/child relationship we authors have with our products, to make a manuscript into a book. I know when I first finished "Journey to Redemption" I thought it was really good, not a lot of polish required. But thanks to my editor, I now know an even better work was lying underneath the dull patina of grammar mistakes and rambling writing. I'm hoping the polished "Journey to Redemption" will be ready by the end of May. But like the writers version of old saying goes, "It ain't over until the editor says it sings" First, I'd like to thank my editor Susan for her hard work. I wore out her red ink pen, and this is just phrase one of the process. That's the good news. The bad news is that Journey to Redemption is very complex story (a category 5 plot structure in technical terms; Fortress was a two) and I've got more rework to do than I had figured. That's why you use a professional editor people. I can't say that enough if your trying be a professional writer.
Now for more bad news. This means that instead of Journey to Redemption being available in March like I planned, it will be more like May. But as I get more details, I'll let you know. I know it is more important to put out a good product than hit some deadline. I will ship no book before it's time. I'll try to put up some stuff onto www.Holimoren.com to help build the world, and maybe drop some hints on the follow up to Journey to Redemption. Thanks for reading, thanks for having patience, and please leave a review on the book if you haven't already. Just a quick update on where I am at with the next Holimoren story. It is going to be another Dar story, set years after Fortress of Angels. I've sent it off to the editor, Susan, and she's wearing out a full pack of red pens to help get it into shape. The cover artist, Vinnie, is also getting started, and once it's done, I'll put the book up for pre-order. "Journey to Redemption" is next, and I've started working on the third leg of the Dar story. Tentatively called "Assault on Bywater", it takes place just months after Journey to Redemption. After that I'm going to visit another character while Dar takes some rest. All the stories are set in Holimoren, so you'll recognize the places, just with new faces.
When the marked up edition of the manuscript comes back, I'll let you know. I'm trying to get it done by April, but I will serve no book before its time ;) Remember to drop a comment, I'll post again soon. I've been mailing friends and family copies, but now I have a stash for selling at meet and greets. Looks fancy! You can either order from Amazon, or join the mailing list and ask for a copy when you sign up. When it gets into a book store, I'll let you know!
It has been a while since I did an update, so here is what's going on. First, I was sick. Yeah that sucked. It also put all my plans to take over the world... I mean publish more books, on hold for a while. That's all done now, so I'm back on it. I've been working on hard copies of Fortress, hopefully those will be available from Amazon in the new year. I've set it up that if you buy the paper copy, you get the e-copy for free! I've thought about doing it the opposite way, but then I'd have to charge a ton for the e-book and nobody wants that. It's been fun doing the paperback version, and you'll see a few fun things if you get the book.
Leave a comment if you want an autographed book option when I get my merch plans ironed out. |
